Hands-On with the BSA Buccaneer Pro .177 – A New Standout in the Affordable PCP Rifle Line from BSA Guns

The airgun community has something new to get excited about. The latest release from BSA, the BSA Buccaneer Pro .177, blends classic styling with modern performance. Paired with a Hawke Frontier First Focal Plane (FFP) scope, this new PCP rifle is shaping up to be a strong contender in the mid-range market.

A Promising Start for the BSA Buccaneer Pro

We recently took the Buccaneer Pro out for a quick test session, and the first impressions were very positive. The rifle fills to 232 bar and delivers around 30 consistent shots per fill. It produces energy levels between 19 and 21 foot-pounds, depending on the pellet used — impressive numbers for a .177 caliber PCP. In addition, the rifle includes a threaded barrel, adjustable trigger geometry, a smooth side lever, and an integrated regulator for consistent performance. These upgrades give a modern edge to BSA’s trusted traditional platform.

Scope Setup: Hawke Optics Frontier FFP

For this hands-on test, we topped the Buccaneer Pro with a Hawke Optics Frontier FFP scope. The premium glass and reliable tracking helped us get a clear picture of the rifle’s capabilities. While the scope is on the higher end for casual shooters, it made a great match for evaluating accuracy right out of the box.

Pellet Testing and Performance

We tested four pellet types to evaluate accuracy and consistency:

  • JSB Exact Heavy 10.3 gr
  • Crosman Premier Hollow Point (CPHP) 7.9 gr
  • JTS 8.7 gr
  • H&N Baracuda Match 10.65 gr

Across all four, the Buccaneer Pro performed consistently. Most pellets grouped tightly, with only slight variations between brands. Overall, accuracy remained stable and predictable — a promising result for further testing.

Notes on Ammo Compatibility

While the rifle handled standard pellets well, it did not perform as well with JSB KnockOut slugs during this first round. We plan to test other slug types in future sessions to explore compatibility further. For now, traditional domed pellets appear to be the best match.

A PCP Rifle That Balances Tradition and Innovation

The BSA Buccaneer Pro .177 strikes a strong balance between classic airgun design and modern PCP features. Although it doesn’t offer external user adjustments, it delivers reliable power, smooth handling, and consistent accuracy straight out of the box. These traits will appeal to shooters who value plug-and-play performance. With its impressive accuracy, solid build quality, and dependable regulator, the Buccaneer Pro stands out in BSA’s affordable PCP lineup.
